Schweitzer Has Record Snow Two Years in a Row! Another record ski season for 2009, even with the difficult economy.

What a great season Schweitzer had. Winter Carnival rocked, and Mardi Gras was it's typical good time. With Sandpoint below the mountain, and vast lake Pend Oreille, this part of North Idaho is a magical region, and those of us who live here know we have a special gift. The new owners of Schweitzer have shown a great commitment to cooperation between town and mountain, and the coordinated events and fun has been really a treat to visitor and local alike.

Weather prognosticators are predicting a warmer winter for our region, due much in part to el nino, (follow this link for the NOAA predictions) as well as lower precipitation. For those that live here, this is news presents the proverbial double-edged sword. We welcome things being a bit warmer with less snow. The last two years had record flakes dumped on us for very long winter seasons. The other side of the coin is Schweitzer needs the snow to make it the premier resort it has become. Because of our big lake, many think that our top tourist season is summer, but winter and snow sports is the #1 draw.

Schweitzer Mountain as a resort planning for just this kind of year has made great progress in the snow making system that began installation last year. It is now fully functional, and the resort is no longer completely relying on mother nature to provide snow for its runs. (Read this story on Schweitzer's snow making system)

So, we believe we will have another classic, even epic ski season.

  SANDPOINT, NORTH IDAHO

Right below Schweitzer Mountain is the jewel of Sandpoint on Lake Pend Oreille. The National attention that Sandpoint, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, and Lake Pend Oreille have received in the last few years has been amazing. Amazing only if you haven't been here. Our area has been featured in USA Today and Smart Money Magazine. Sunset magazine called us the "West's best small town." National Geographic Adventure magazine voted Sandpoint one of the 10 best adventure towns in the nation. Outside magazine featured Schweitzer & named Sandpoint the "cool Northwest's hot property." Schweitzer was in Away.com and has been in many ski mags such as Ski Snowboard. Forbes.com and MSNBC loved our telecommuting, and Cabin Life, Cabin Living called Sandpoint "the quintessential Western outdoor lover's town." The latest? Sunset Magazine named Sandpoint in its Top 10 Dream Towns for 2008.

We have one of the most beautiful by-ways in America, the second largest lake in the west, and it takes just minutes to get to the top of Schweitzer Mountain, our top-rated ski haven overlooking Lake Pend Oreille. There are truly few places left like North Idaho.

What to do

While skiing is the obvious choice at Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, there are lots of other things to do. Snowmobiling is great fun, and Priest Lake has what many consider to be the best trails in North America. Another resource for Snowmobiling and other activities is the Selkirk Powder Company. All About Adventures, has Kayaking and Biking. You can ride horses and bikes during other times of year. In the winter, there are lots of music venues in Sandpoint and on the mountain, shopping, and art galleries everywhere. Boating is not suggested in the winter, but many have taken to Lake Kayaking. Of course there is fishing and hunting, depending on season. Last year, many enjoyed months on end of ice fishing. Of course people still ice skate on Sand Creek. Hungry? The saying goes, "Where are the best restaurants in Spokane? Sandpoint!" There is so much more to do, but to see them all, check out our What to Do in North Idaho.
